Use Your Thermostat to Save Money

thermostatSometimes you can get big benefits from small changes. By making some small changes with your thermostat, you could end up with some big improvements on your utility bill. Whether your home air system uses a combination of natural gas and electricity or is totally electric, a properly adjusted thermostat will save a lot of energy throughout the year.

If you have a simple thermostat, try to remember to set it to a more efficient level when you leave the house in the morning. Your home interior may be a little bit uncomfortable when you come home, but it shouldn’t take long for the air to reach a more comfortable temperature once you return your thermostat to its original setting.

If you have a programmable thermostat, then these daily changes will be done for you. Most programmable thermostats divide the day into four time periods. You can decide what time these periods start and stop. For example, you can program one temperature setting for the morning and a different setting for the main part of the day. Input a third temperature setting for the evening, and then finally decide on a temperature level for the nighttime. Most programmable thermostats have the ability to distinguish between weekdays and weekends. You can come up with a completely different temperature profile for the weekends.

Recently, I was lucky enough to take part in a program by the utility company and received a new smart thermostat. It’s essentially like a programmable thermostat, but with one major difference. It can communicate with the Internet. That means that I can log onto my thermostat anywhere I have an Internet connection. I have access to setting up different programs using an easy graphical interface. The thermostat also stores detailed information online. I can compare external temperatures to the temperatures inside my home and also determine how much time my air conditioning or heating is running.

The main reason for adjusting your thermostat on a daily basis is that it saves energy. Why heat or cool your home when no one is there? New thermostat options make it easy to stay comfortable and safe money at the same time.
