Littering is not a new concept to anyone. Remember when you were young and tried to throw that candy wrapper on the ground? You were told not to do it, and learned that it was a bad choice.. With the proper placement of trash cans at mostly all sporting events and many street corners, it is still a large mystery as to why we litter our earth with trash on a daily basis.
Some of the most noticeable impact of littering can be felt by looking outside your home, along the roads and pathways, or simply take a look at the sidewalks as you drive by them. The visible effects are not going away and the trash is making our countries, cities, homes, and streets look like a junk yard. With the look of a trashy area comes bad smells and an overall distrusting feeling to the area that is being polluted.
Lets take a look at some amounts of time it takes for a piece of trash to decompose on its own. This means that if nobody picks it up and cleans it, you will see it there for this many years before it ends up back in the earth completely.
The Worst Types Of Litter
- Styrofoam Container = More than 1,000,000 years
- Plastic Jug = 1,000,000 years
- Disposable Diaper = 550 years
- Aluminum Can = 200-500 years
Organic and Natural Resource Litter
- Wool Sock = 1 year
- Paper Bag = 1 month
- Banana Peel = 3-4 weeks
Now the numbers may be a bit shocking to some people, as they never realized that Styrofoam cup they tossed out the window a while ago will still be there in a million years. But a comparison had to be shown so you realize how large of an impact you are having by throwing away those extremely hazardous types of litter and learning to use more organic and natural materials in your homes and businesses.
