3 Steps to a Lower Electricity Bill

lower electricity billAs we go boldly into the future, something you can probably count on is the rising cost of electricity. Figuring out how to save electricity will always be important. Reducing the size of your home electric bill is something that can be done in a three-step process. First you need to figure out what’s using the most electricity in your home. Then you need to try switching to more energy-efficient appliances if possible. If there something you can’t replace, you need to figure out a way to use those items more efficiently.

Start out by discovering which items in your house are your “big spenders.” There a lot of gadgets–big and small–in your house that use electricity. Some of them use just a wee bit; others use a lot. When you try to find the culprits behind your big electricity bill, look at your appliances first. I’m talking about major appliances like heaters, air conditioners, freezers, refrigerators and stoves. You can forget about nightlights and ceiling fans; they use such a small amount of current, you could use them constantly and not have an impact on your costs.

Now figure out which of those appliances are new and which are old. There is a long, well-established trend to manufacture appliances that use less energy. So old appliances are usually the ones that use the most electricity. If your budget can stand to replace these old appliances, switching may actually pay for themselves after a period of several years by using less electricity. When you’re shopping for new appliances, look for the Energy Star rating that tells you how much power these new appliances will use in the course of the year.

If you can’t afford to replace everything that’s old in your house, then you need to make sure that you keep the old appliances turned off as much as possible. Obviously, you can’t do that with your refrigerator or freezer, but you can make sure that the fridge door stays closed and that the units are well-maintained. That includes cleaning them, because dust and dirt will reduce their energy efficiency.

Following this process could help you see improvements in your power bill as early as next month. Just go on a search for power-hungry appliances lurking around your house, replace the ones that are hungry for too much electricity, and use the others more efficiently. You may be surprised at how much money you save.
